Fuji-Servetto steps up in Stage 3 of the 27th Giro di Sardegna

GIRO DI SARDEGNA – The FUJI-SERVETTO rider climbs into the 4th place of the GC after a thrilling stage, which had 20 riders coming together to the finish into the main field, with the Spaniard safely in, as Lorenzetto (Lampre) lost his leader jersey to stage winner Oscar Gatto (ISD)

DEL NERO STILL UP-FRONT AT SARDINIA

Jesus del Nero has fought amongst some of the best pro riders in Italy during for another day at the 27th Giro di Sardegna, which saw an up-and-down, 173-km route from Oristano to Tortoli be raced in today’s journey.

The FUJI-SERVETTO rider kept himself in the main peloton, composed of about 20 riders, which broke apart in the last k’s of the stage and went out of sight, included race leader Mirko Lorenzetto (Lampre), Alessandro Petacchi (LPR) and Enrico Gasparotto (also from Lampre). The FUJI-SERVETTO squad gained control of the race during the ascents to the categorized climbs of the day, with a hard tempo that made the purest sprinters go down.

“I’m truly satisfied about the team’s attitude during the stage," team manager Joxean Fernandez Matxin explained at the end of the stage.  "The guys tried to break the race into pieces at the front of the climbs, but we didn’t go as good as expected because of lack of terrain knowledge. After the 1st. Cat. climb, we went over a short, non-categorized climb. Benitez and Serrano were fully able to keep the tempo, but they went down to the team car to get water, so they got out of the group and could not return into it."

Iker Camano suffered mechanical trouble today, which held him back from arriving with the 20-man group at the front of the race. The stage win was decided in a very short field sprint, in which Oscar Gatto (ISD) outsprinted the rest of the big breakaway to claim his first ever pro win. Del Nero came across the line in 12th place and gains 4th position at the GC, the distance to the leader being shortened to six seconds with two stages left. The first one of those will be the fourth of the Sardinian stagerace, as the peloton covers a 147-km route from Tortoli to the big city of Cagliari.
